One-to-one Step 2CS tutoring with an MD

For many international students the Step 2 clinical skills examination is the major barrier to residency training and/or practice in the United States. This is due to a number of factors, including difficulties preparing for the examination cases and significant language barriers. Regardless of the specific barrier, it is a shame to let one test stand in the way of a lifelong dream of practicing medicine in the United States. As a physician who completed training at a top ranked American medical school I have a deep love for teaching and have been blessed with great scores on all 3 USMLE examinations. Consequently I am interested in partnering with a few students a month to help them succeed in passing this examination.

I am offering intense online study one-to-one, focusing on the following 3 areas:

1. Brief review of clinical concepts key to performing well during the testing encounters, including practice taking patient histories and a review of key physical examination maneuvers

2. Focused practice of clinical communication skills, highlighting common mistakes and providing guidance for frequently encountered scenarios

3. Rigorous English language practice through focused rehearsal of common clinical scenarios that you might see on the actual examination. A common mistake I have seen among IMGs is practicing for this test with non-native English speakers. Working with a native English speaker (and MD who took the test) will enable you to have direct feedback on language mistakes you are unintentionally making that can result in failing this examination

Due to stringent clinical and research demands on my time the students I work with will have to be somewhat flexible with me in regards to my schedule. My goal is to see all my students pass this examination after working with me, and as such, I will have to limit the number of students I partner with at any given time. There are a number of courses available around this country, many charging exorbitant amounts of money to allow you to work with an MD, usually in a group of 20 to 30 students. I will be working with you one-to-one, and while I will charge an hourly fee, it will be less expensive than many courses with less MD interaction. If you are interested, contact me via PM and we can discuss details.

S Smith, MD
